Studying history of art allows you to examine the visual arts through a range of historical, social, geographical, cultural and psychological contexts. You’ll consider the meaning implied by the subject and style of art forms, as well as the impact that art has on our lives. Our degrees develop your critical and analytical skills with respect to modern and contemporary art, ideas and visual culture. More generally, they also develop your ability to express ideas clearly and your expertise in gathering insights from a range of subjects. The History of Art Department at UCL is one of the most dynamic centres for the study of art history and visual cultures in the world.

Meanwhile, Christian liturgies were held in the interior of the churches, the exterior usually having little to no ornamentation. The Maya civilization began around 1800 BC and grew until the arrival of Spanish colonizers in the 1500s. They occupied southeast Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Various artist did not want to create artwork that everyone was conforming to at the time. These two movements helped other artist to create pieces that were not viewed as traditional art.

Mannerism has also been used more generally to describe a period following the Renaissance and preceding the Baroque. The Early Renaissance was a period of great creative and intellectual activity when artists broke away completely from the parameters of Byzantine art. It is generally accepted that it started in Florence in present-day Italy in the early 15th century. It is characterized by a surge of interest in classical literature, philosophy and art, the growth of commerce, the discovery of new continents, and new inventions.

A few of the original impressionist continued producing significant work into the 1910s and 1920s. The next generation of professors at Vienna included Max Dvořák, Julius von Schlosser, Hans Tietze, Karl Maria Swoboda, and Josef Strzygowski. A number of the most important twentieth-century art historians, including Ernst Gombrich, received their degrees at Vienna at this time. The term “Second Vienna School” (or “New Vienna School”) usually refers to the following generation of Viennese scholars, including Hans Sedlmayr, Otto Pächt, and Guido Kaschnitz von Weinberg. These scholars began in the 1930s to return to the work of the first generation, particularly to Riegl and his concept of Kunstwollen, and attempted to develop it into a full-blown art-historical methodology. Sedlmayr, in particular, rejected the minute study of iconography, patronage, and other approaches grounded in historical context, preferring instead to concentrate on the aesthetic qualities of a work of art.

The pottery is often decorated with geometric patterns or abstract representations of animals, people or plants. For example, you can study an MA in museum and gallery studies, curating or conservation science. You’ll choose from a wider range of optional modules, which cover art historical topics from African art to the New York School as well as museum studies, critical theory and the contemporary art market. Terms such as sex, gender, sexuality, and sexual difference now frequent in visual culture, yet they stem from divergent theoretical trajectories. In light of queer theory’s critique of heteronormativity , the module asks after the past and future trajectories of key figures such as the maternal, paternal and the child. All aspects will be discussed in relation to a wide range of films, plays and artworks.

  • Like the Egyptians but unlike the Greeks, Etruscans believed in an after-life, thus tomb or funerary art was a characteristic feature of Etruscan culture.
  • It would certainly be a history that remained on the fringes of what most people recognise as the central concerns of life.
  • Richard Brody of The New Yorker wrote that detractors who compare it to Ingmar Bergman’s Persona miss the point, though Brody says Swanberg’s images are “of a kind” to those Bergman shot in the 1950s and 1960s.

The succeeding Orientalizing period was characterized by the influence of Near Eastern designwork, notably curvilinear, zoomorphic and floral patterns. In Northern Europe, this period saw the schools of Antwerp Mannerism, The Little Masters, and the Fontainebleau School, among many others. Originating in c.1720 Paris, Rococo is characterized by natural motifs, soft colours, curving lines, asymmetry and themes including love, nature and light-hearted entertainment. His work inspired the surrealist concept of drawing imagery from dreams and the unconscious. Heinrich Wölfflin was not the only scholar to invoke psychological theories in the study of art. Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud wrote a book on the artist Leonardo da Vinci, in which he used Leonardo’s paintings to interrogate the artist’s psyche and sexual orientation.

Non-Western or global perspectives on art have become increasingly predominant in the art historical canon since the 1980s. In short, this approach examines the work of art in the context of the world within which it was created. The examples and perspective in this article may not represent a worldwide view of the subject. The Whistler Scholarships are open to students in all disciplines of the College of Arts. Increasing global interaction during this time saw an equivalent influence of other cultures into Western art, such as Pablo Picasso being influenced by Iberian sculpture, African sculpture and Primitivism. Japonism, and Japanese woodcuts had an immense influence on Impressionism and subsequent artistic developments. Later in the 20th century, Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism came to prominence. Inspired by the excavations of the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum from 1748, a renewed interest in the arts of antiquity occurred. Neoclassicism dominates Western art from the mid to late 18th century until the 1830s.
