The creative industries, which include art, design and music, are an important part of the British economy – one of the areas of the economy that is still growing. The way art is taught means that interaction with other students and with the teacher is different in art and design classes. Students comment on the bonds they form with classmates because of their shared interests and ideas. The art teacher is someone they can bounce ideas off rather than telling them what to do. Creativity can also help with wellbeing and improving health and happiness – many students in the TALE study commented that arts lessons acted as an outlet for releasing the pressures of studying as well as those of everyday life.
You’ll be taught by staff who are nationally and internationally renowned and published artist researcher teachers. Akshara Foundation of Arts & Learning was born with a dream to enrich the life of every child by infusing the arts into the process of learning. Thus, channelising their creativity and giving them the opportunity to ride over the limitations around them.
It is aimed at initiating and extending practical, critical and contextual understanding of contemporary art practices and how these can be used to explore social and cultural issues. You will engage with contemporary theory in critical and cultural studies such as semiotics, hermeneutics, post-structuralism and psychoanalysis. We showcase six projects annually in our gallery spaces at 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning and also work in partnership with other organisations to deliver touring exhibitions and off site projects.
Through this study you build independent research leading to your major project that can be focused through educational models, workshops, creative practice and encounters that inform and are responsive to art educational contexts. You should have an undergraduate degree of at least second class standard in an appropriate arts-based area with additional experience in learning contexts and a commitment to arts education.
This degree has partnerships with international galleries including Tate Modern, the Whitechapel Gallery and the Showroom Gallery. Students use sketchbooks to record, from first- hand experience, their personal responses to the Renaissance works of art, thus developing their critical appraisal skills and adding to their knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of art. In 2018 a landmark research project commissioned by Arts Council England, and undertaken by the University of Nottingham, called Tracking Learning and Engagement in the Arts outlined the overwhelmingly positive benefits of arts and cultural education for young people. The research drew from the experience and voices of thousands of young people and their teachers in secondary and special schools.

Our exhibitions and artist led projects provide a framework for events which bring together individuals and organisations inside and outside of the arts to engage in debate and creative practice. Our work is particularly focused on issues of social inclusion and diversity and seeks to engage with global issues while being rooted in the history of our locality. Through this module you will continue to develop and consolidate your praxis and position as artist teacher.
Our students come from diverse phases and sectors in the field of art and design education and the expanded fields of gallery, community and self organised educational practices. Through the course individual perspectives and experiences meet with those of your peers providing you with the stimulation and challenges that different perceptions can bring. We seek to evolve a dialogue through direct experience and engagement with the arts and their value as taught subjects, both within the institution and outside of it. That schools consider teaching art & design at Key Stage 1 and 2 as a distinct subject. Whilst we appreciate many schools approach art in a project or theme-based manner, our experience is that when art is taught as a distinct subject in a skills-based manner there is clearer progression and the teaching and learning is more rigorous.

By creating a safe and nurturing environment, pupils are encouraged to take creative risks and to learn from the journey, rather than head towards a pre-defined end result. Basic skills are introduced and then built upon, including drawing, printmaking, sketchbooks, painting and making. Skills are revisited and the use of ongoing sketchbook work underpins this process.
