This degree has partnerships with international galleries including Tate Modern, the Whitechapel Gallery and the Showroom Gallery. Students use sketchbooks to record, from first- hand experience, their personal responses to the Renaissance works of art, thus developing their critical appraisal skills and adding to their knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of art. In 2018 a landmark research project commissioned by Arts Council England, and undertaken by the University of Nottingham, called Tracking Learning and Engagement in the Arts outlined the overwhelmingly positive benefits of arts and cultural education for young people. Placements are one of the possible ways of fulfilling your modules and many of our students have chosen this route. There is scope for placements with a number of organisations in the city and beyond, however it is your responsibility to plan and organise your placement with the organisation you wish to work with. The creative industries, which include art, design and music, are an important part of the British economy – one of the areas of the economy that is still growing. The way art is taught means that interaction with other students and with the teacher is different in art and design classes. Students comment on the bonds they form with classmates because of their shared interests and ideas. The art teacher is someone they can bounce ideas off rather than telling them what to do. Creativity can also help with wellbeing and improving health and happiness – many students in the TALE study commented that arts lessons acted as an outlet for releasing the pressures of studying as well as those of everyday life.

The programme encourages teachers and learners to try new ideas, build confidence, collaborate, problem-solve and communicate. It places high value on reflective activity, social, emotional and intellectual engagement as well as developing creativity skills. The Art of Learning uses the arts and creative process to support improvements in the executive function of the brain in young people and creative confidence in their teachers.
