As a MAAL alumna, you’ll continue to research and engage in the presentation of your practices through practice, exhibitions, socially-engaged projects, international conferences and international journals. It’s not currently possible for international students to study part-time if you require a Student Visa, however this is currently being reviewed and will be confirmed in the new year. The modules of the programme are all underpinned with theories of contemporary art, learning and critical and dialectical pedagogical theories and philosophies.

We are constantly investing in our estate and are currently in the process of spending £340 million on new learning facilities. The study on this course is interdisciplinary in nature and encompasses both theory-led and practice-led study. You will require use of a laptop, and most students do prefer to have their own. However, you can borrow a laptop from the university or use one of our shared computer rooms.

Projects

This is a unique professional development opportunity at the intersection between art practice and educational theory. This programme will enhance your understanding of educational theory and practice by focusing on issues of culture, language and identity, and is taught by internationally-renowned experts. Cluster schools and MATs may wish to develop this into a shared Arts Festival; a bespoke provision for cohorts of schools creating inspiring opportunities for pupils’ to perform and for schools to engage their wider communities. The service involves planning, liaising with identified co-ordinators and cultural venues, providing expert tuition in the Creative and Performing Arts, developing a programme, managing logistics, hosting an art exhibition and running the event.

Financial Support

Our toolkit comprises session plans, input from artists and creative practitioners, digital assessments and technical support throughout. This module enables you to articulate in verbal and written forms the breadth and depth of your knowledge and understanding of relevant theories and contexts in relationship to your arts based practice, placement, internship or other negotiated professional engagement. We want you to be deeply engaged with theory and practice to develop and sustain your ideas and practices as artist-teachers. That schools work hard to break down preconceptions amongst teachers and pupils as to what drawing or sculpture is or might be.

Research Projects

Studying on MA Arts and Education Practices was a great privilege as the course allowed me time and space to reflect upon and revisit my art practice, as well as research my developing interest in faith schools and alternative arts education. Over the course of the year, I experimented with various materials and processes and felt the independence of the course was integral to achieving success. Conducted over five years, this longitudinal study used design principles that built the capacity of the Dallas community to design and improve arts-rich programmes for children and youth. Examined the impact of the Guggenheim’s Learning Through Art programme on students’ ability to describe and interpret art, and to apply these skills to understanding written text. Culture Case-A UK resource identifying studies that describe the educational impact of engaging in arts and culture.
