Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course. Pursue your interests within the expanded field of arts education through research and practice.

You will explore the concepts and practices of a number of key critical pedagogues including Paulo Freire, Ira Shor, Antonio Darder and Henry Giroux as well as the theories and philosophies of John Dewey, Jean Piaget and Karl Marx. This programme gives artists, practitioners, and teachers the opportunity to enrich and consolidate theories of contemporary art and learning. Engage with practice and theory, develop innovative research approaches, and critically debate the changing nature of contemporary art. In the UK, school time and budgets are under pressure and school inspections increasingly value ‘core’ subjects as the indicators of school level and success. This has led to a steady decline in the number of students choosing to study arts subjects at school.

You will be supported by a highly professional staff team, doctoral researchers, technical demonstrators and artists in residence in a innovative, creative and supportive environment. Innovative community of experienced and aspiring art educators, welcoming those willing to critique current practices to ask not only how we should teach art, but also how art can teach us. This also enables part-time and full-time students to attend the same evening teaching sessions and therefore form a collaborative and supportive learning environment. To enable greater flexibility for you and more equitable experience for full-time and part-time students, the MA Arts and Learning programme has a modular structure, with the majority of teaching sessions usually conducted in the evenings. You’ll be part of a diverse student community, and will have the opportunity to develop and maintain collaborative peer networks and support.

You might be a teacher who writes; a writer who works in education; a poet, a novelist or a short story writer. Whatever your background, this course will teach you more about the connections between creative writing and education. If you’re invited to interview, you may be asked to bring a small portfolio of work as a starting point for discussion, comprising of either current or past practice. Occasionally, we’ll make candidates an offer of a place on the basis of their application and qualifications alone. Please note that due to staff research commitments not all of these modules may be available every year. For you to obtain the postgraduate degree of MA Arts and Leaning you will need to complete 180 credits at Masters level.

Financial Support

Its aim is to facilitate new young audiences in creating, experimenting and engaging in our galleries and online with Tate’s collection and exhibitions. Tracking Arts Learning and Engagement was a collaborative research project involving Tate, The Royal Shakespeare Company and the University of Nottingham. The research focused on thirty secondary schools spread across England and included three special schools.

  • We work in partnership to develop projects by providing assistance with fundraising, research and development and curatorial support and we will build long-term relationships with artists working with them in varied capacities over a period of time.
  • There is an appetite for collaboration between teachers and arts organisations, and for them to explore and improve their practice and the outcomes for young people.

  • One can donate freely towards Akshara Foundation of Arts and Learning for the development and betterment of not privileged children by giving them an opportunity to do more and be more.
  • You will independently identify and investigate your chosen line of enquiry to enable you to engage in practical hands on experience of a fabrication/production process.

The first core modules- Narratives of Art & Design Education encourage students to develop related research ideas relevant to their particular interests and aspirations. The module is an opportunity to learn and critically reflect on the skills of collaboration by enabling you to create a research-informed interdisciplinary project with students from complementary disciplines, or with academic staff. You should also mention your future plans and how a postgraduate qualification fits in. Try to look beyond your postgraduate study – do you plan to jump straight into a specific career or follow your studies with a research degree? Lastly, use plain, professional English and, where possible, utilise the language of your chosen industry.

As a result, I was seconded to Cheshire West and Chester Music Service where I worked for over five years. In order to ensure that the information and guidance I share with colleagues continues to be current, I am undertaking a Masters in Creative Practices in Education at the University of Chester. I also represent Edsential in the Local Community Education Partnerships, or LCEPs, an Arts Council initiative with direction provided by our bridge organisation, Curious Minds. There is an appetite for collaboration between teachers and arts organisations, and for them to explore and improve their practice and the outcomes for young people. We also respond to teachers’ interest in having more opportunities to develop their skills and professional practice in teaching through the arts, and in understanding their pivotal role in creating and delivering an arts-rich curriculum and school environment. The arts play an important role in enriching young people’s learning and educational experiences.

Student Research Projects

Individually and collaboratively you will continue to explore your interwoven practices underpinned by theoretical frameworks. This process will be enabled through planning and executing a structured programme of independent research that draws upon pedagogy and contemporary art and theory, critically applying themes and issues you have developed through the MAAT programme. This module, in partnership with Tate Modern, continues to support and develop your praxis through engaging with the theories and concepts of Critical Pedagogy. You will explore the potential of the artist teacher to operate at a level beyond orthodoxy – toward a critical pedagogy. Contemporary art practices will be placed within a socio- political framework to illustrate the position of artist educators within this current and critical pedagogical agenda.
