Programs exhibit a substantial heterogeneity with respect to art domains, content, intensity, duration and delivery methods of arts classes or interventions, all across a small number of studies. The causal link isn’t immediate, but influenced by a range of hypothesised ‘active ingredients’ . Where we were unable to observe an impact of these activities on literacy, it’s difficult to know if that’s because these activities don’t reliably produce the required active ingredients, or that the active ingredients don’t reliably improve literacy.

For information on how you can fund your postgraduate degree at the University of Exeter, please visit our dedicated funding page. There is the option to choose a module ‘Reflecting on Educational Practices’ as your optional module, thereby gaining skills which can be helpful in finding employment following the course. University of South Florida and Exeter have entered into a 5 year student exchange between the two Universities. They launched the University of Exeter / University of South Florida Research Catalyst Fund to provide grants to support joint research initiatives between the two institutions.

These were insufficient to answer the research questions in this review, highlighting the need for further experimental research with sufficient sample sizes in the field, especially in the domains of drama, dance and visual arts. Second, the limitation to studies in peer-reviewed journals meant that the review excluded unpublished literature. Fourth, the choice of the DeSeCo framework and exclusion of studies in therapeutic setting will have excluded intrinsic outcomes of arts education not covered by the criteria. Finally, outcomes need to be broad enough or appropriate for the respective program. As illustrated in the introduction, the choice of exclusively instrumental outcomes has been critiqued as it disregards the intrinsic outcomes of the arts. While the DeSeCo framework selected for the categorization of outcomes in this review adopts a wider perspective and arguably includes intrinsic processes in intra- and interpersonal level outcomes, the limitations of this perspective will be discussed below.

Pursue your interests within the expanded field of arts education through research and practice. Our taught modules strengthen your subject knowledge and connect you with contemporary creative and educational practice. Our pioneering MA Arts and Education Practices course focuses on the exploration of educational models at the intersection of practice, teaching and pedagogic theory. The only Arts Education MA in the UK based in a School of Art, we provide a unique platform for the art educator…. With over 26,900 students from around 100 countries, we’re a large and diverse university set in the heart of Birmingham with a focus on practice-based learning. Four studies reported mixed method approaches by incorporating observational and interview data (Walsh-Bowers, 1992; Walsh-Bowers and Basso, 1999; Catterall and Peppler, 2007) to understand student’s responses to the intervention, their engagement and processes of development.

  • For example, a long research tradition has examined the so-called Mozart effect, in which Rauscher et al. observed that participants showed significantly higher spatial performance after listening to a Mozart sonata.
  • An evolutionary perspective was applied to the domain of childlore and handclapping songs .
  • Although, replications and meta-analyses have struggled to confirm these effects (e.g., Pietschnig et al., 2010).
  • The study on this course is interdisciplinary in nature and encompasses both theory-led and practice-led study.
  • ‘Arts can play a hugely important role in children and young people’s education and development, and can shape who they grow up to be.

On successful completion of the course you will have a wide variety of roles open to you, including education coordinator, museums and galleries officer, or positions within television, radio and film and other media industries, creative businesses and third sector organisations. It could also lead to marketing, communication, management and leadership roles as well as arts administration. You will also be encouraged to engage artistically and take advantage of extra-curricular arts opportunities to enrich your understanding and experience. You will take part in work related experience, visits and placements to arts education establishments which require a check through the Disclosure Barring Service .

Arts And Education Practices

Instrumental perspectives in evaluating arts education have frequently focused on outcomes relating to the DeSeCo category using tools interactively (e.g., by assessing transfer effects to non-arts subjects, linguistic or computational skills). The DeSeCo framework was thus chosen as a tool to group a wide range of outcomes into categories and to enable an exploration of effects on similar and dissimilar outcomes. In general, the quantitative research to date provides mixed evidence regarding the effects of the arts on academic outcomes and largely remains on the correlational level. A difficulty when comparing results from different studies and programs is a lack of a common evaluation approach and programs’ unique characteristics, contexts and quality .

Advocacy for the arts in education should build on moves in education policy that encourage breadth and balance, rather than focus on generalised claims of impact on attainment. The modules of the programme are all underpinned with theories of contemporary art, learning and critical and dialectical pedagogical theories and philosophies. ‘Learning to draw, play music, dance and act can all have a positive impact on children and young people’s wellbeing and creativity, as well as on pupils’ development in other subjects in the curriculum. Another past offender coming to the end of a long sentence was able to use his experiences with Kestrel in his parole hearing, as taking part in arts education ‘changed his trajectory and was truly life-changing’. In Year 2 there is an opportunity to be placed in a community setting working with those involved in arts in education in different cultural contexts.
