Our students come from diverse phases and sectors in the field of art and design education and the expanded fields of gallery, community and self organised educational practices. Through the course individual perspectives and experiences meet with those of your peers providing you with the stimulation and challenges that different perceptions can bring. We seek to evolve a dialogue through direct experience and engagement with the arts and their value as taught subjects, both within the institution and outside of it. That schools consider teaching art & design at Key Stage 1 and 2 as a distinct subject. Whilst we appreciate many schools approach art in a project or theme-based manner, our experience is that when art is taught as a distinct subject in a skills-based manner there is clearer progression and the teaching and learning is more rigorous.

By creating a safe and nurturing environment, pupils are encouraged to take creative risks and to learn from the journey, rather than head towards a pre-defined end result. Basic skills are introduced and then built upon, including drawing, printmaking, sketchbooks, painting and making. Skills are revisited and the use of ongoing sketchbook work underpins this process.

This work was presented as my final project and exhibited as part of the end of year Masters degree show, Turn Out. Teacher Development Fund
It is aimed at initiating and extending practical, critical and contextual understanding of contemporary art practices and how these can be used to explore social and cultural issues. You will engage with contemporary theory in critical and cultural studies such as semiotics, hermeneutics, post-structuralism and psychoanalysis. We showcase six projects annually in our gallery spaces at 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning and also work in partnership with other organisations to deliver touring exhibitions and off site projects.
This section contains a selection of works exploring the impact of arts and culture on education. The references may be useful for advocacy, to help with funding applications or to inform thinking about how artists, arts organisation and the Arts add value to work with schools and young people. The programme encourages teachers and learners to try new ideas, build confidence, collaborate, problem-solve and communicate. It places high value on reflective activity, social, emotional and intellectual engagement as well as developing creativity skills. The Art of Learning uses the arts and creative process to support improvements in the executive function of the brain in young people and creative confidence in their teachers.
